Katarina Witt started to ice skate when she was 5 years. Her talents soon became evident as she enrolled into a school specifically designed for kids with a flair for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Here she first saw their trainer Jutta M ller. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982, when she placed 2nd at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her grace and elegance captured the attention of everyone immediately, and from that point onwards she was dominating the sport. Olympic success Katarina Wit took home gold in ice skating for women at the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a highly competitive and intense contest. Then, four years after her win, she managed to claim an additional competitive race. The free skating contest, however she won the gold medal upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short-form program. Witt was the first woman ever since Sonja Haenie to win an apex figure skater. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career as an actor. Although she didn't get a medal, she impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. In 1995, Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
